Brief History of The Bell Tower
The building has been standing since 1874 when the area was known as Black Bottom for the muddy residue left after periodic river floods. This neighborhood was said to be full of life and culture, and it’s even believed that esteemed writer Zora Neale Hurston drew inspiration for her works on black city life from roaming these muddy streets.
As one of the first churches constructed in Nashville by formerly enslaved people after the Civil War, The Bell Tower is a testament to African American history. Affectionately referred to as Saint Paul African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, this structure is one of the few remaining buildings from Black Bottom - which was largely destroyed following World War II.
